Amphetamine Mixing

February 6, 2010

It is always important to use caution when combining drugs. In fact, if a person is taking a prescription medication they should avoid mixing it with other drugs either prescription or over the counter without the expressed permission of their doctor.  This is because mixing drugs can be quite dangerous and even fatal. Most people do not know enough concerning the potential outcomes of mixing drugs together. Therefore, it should mostly be avoided, unless as mentioned above, a doctor authorizes it.

Amphetamines place a considerable amount of strain.  They increase ones blood pressure and heart rate. Therefore, individuals must be particularly careful about using them with other stimulants as this could be dangerous.  Cocaine is an example of a stimulant that should not be mixed with amphetamines. Taken together, they can cause a tremendous amount of strain on the heart and can lead to a person having a heart attack, which can be deadly.  It is also recommended that individuals do not mix amphetamines with ecstasy. Ecstasy is a psycho-stimulant that can be damaging to the heart when taken with amphetamines as well. Individuals may mix ecstasy with illegal amphetamines (speed or meth) in order to add a psychoactive element to their 'high'.

There is another danger associated with ecstasy and amphetamine mixing aside from the strain it places on the heart. There is the potential of overheating. This is a danger that is inherent in ecstasy use. Ecstasy is a popular club drug that gives individuals the energy to dance for hours. Many times, while high from ecstasy, individuals don't hydrate themselves during these dancing “marathons” and overheat. This can be deadly.  People have 'expired' from overheating after taking ecstasy.  When ecstasy is combined with amphetamines, the risk of overheating increases, along with the amount of the strain placed on the heart. As a result, this combo is extremely dangerous.

In summary, it is often dangerous to mix drugs. This is true whether they are prescription medications or illegal street drugs.  Individuals who have been prescribed amphetamines should talk to their doctor about drug combinations they should avoid.  Individuals taking illegal substances should abstain from combining amphetamines with any other illegal or prescription drugs. Ecstasy and cocaine should especially be avoided.
