The legality of marijuana in the United States can be a bit confusing. In some states it is allowable for medical uses. In some of those same states, as well as others, individuals are allowed to be in possession of small amounts (typically about one ounce) for personal use. It doesn’t have to be medicinal grade and an individual does not have to have any medical problems. Before anyone goes out and purchases marijuana, it is important to determine whether or not it is legal to be in possession of marijuana and for what particular uses, in ones own state in order to avoid any trouble.
As stated above, in some U.S. states, marijuana is legal for medical use. It is very effective in treating a number of ailments. It is sometimes used as an anti-nausea drug and is especially helpful for persons receiving cancer treatments or chemotherapy. These treatments tend to cause sever nausea that is difficult to treat. It may also be able to be used as an anticonvulsant, for pain, glaucoma therapy and mood disorders.
Surprisingly, marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug. Drugs given this classification are viewed as having the potential to be very addicting and have no medical uses. Individuals caught with them in their possession either with the intent to use or distribute face tough penalties. Studies have proven that marijuana does have some medicinal value. Marijuana can be used to treatment a number of ailments including glaucoma, nausea and even pain, as mentioned above. Because of this, there are some groups dedicated to getting the laws declaring marijuana illegal, overturned. It has been an uphill battle with lots of resistance. However, it seems that there have recently been some small victories. Marijuana is legal in small quantities in some states and legal for medicinal uses as well in some parts of the country. Whether or not it will ever be legal without restrictions will be something that everyone will just have to wait and see.
As of right now, marijuana is still illegal in some states. Individuals that live in those states and are caught with marijuana run the risk of facing probation, jail time or court ordered rehabilitation.
