Alcohol Addiction

February 6, 2010

Alcohol addiction is a serious problem experienced by millions of individuals all over the world. Although America certainly has a problem with alcohol addiction, it isn’t the only country where this problem exists. It is pervasive and global.  Alcohol addiction often times does not get the attention it deserves. This is for a number of reasons. Many individuals hide the fact that they have an addiction and deny it. Other people simply don’t recognize it.

The only way to effectively treat an addiction to alcohol is to admit that there is a problem.  Once an individual does that, they will then need to determine the seriousness of it.  If an individual is able to successfully treat the problem on their own because it is not severe, great.  If not, some sort of alcohol rehabilitation will be necessary.  There are varying types those in need, will need to find the one method that is best able to help them get sober.

Common forms of alcohol addiction treatment include outpatient or inpatient rehab and 12 step programs. Each has great benefits and can be very effective. However, some will work better for some then for others. In order for treatment to be successful, the addict must find the method or methods which work best for them.

Twelve step programs have been around for some time and have become quite popular. This form of treatment allows individuals to go about their daily lives while still receiving help. There are certain steps (12) that a person must go through in order to complete the program. Outpatient treatment is similar to these types of programs, largely because individuals don’t have to have to check into anywhere. They also often times incorporate some type of support group.  This is largely the format 12 step programs utilize.  However, there are some differences. Individuals will typically work one-on-one with a counselor in outpatient care. Inpatient treatment is another option and is the most intensive. Persons will actually live in a facility and receive care around-the-clock.

Alcohol addiction is a very serious disease. Left unchecked, it can wreak-havoc on a person’s life and destroy their body. Individuals who drink heavily and chronically are at greater risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver and various types of cancers. It is therefore, extremely important for individuals to get help.
