Not only are drugs widely available in South Carolina for the purpose of consumption, but many shipments of these illicit substances are brought into the state with the sole purpose of being distributed to other parts of the country. Powder cocaine, methamphetamine and crack are the predominate drugs in South Carolina and the ones with the highest rates of abuse. Marijuana is widely abused as well but isn’t considered as dangerous or addicting as the ones listed above.

Crack and cocaine are drugs that are cause for major concern. The perils commonly associated with addictions along with the violence surrounding the trafficking of these drugs pose a threat to the communities were they are most frequently sold and used.

Methamphetamine use is increasingly becoming a threat but hasn’t yet become a major problem. Mexican drug trafficking organizations are predominately responsible for the trade. They often act as wholesalers shipping in large quantities of methamphetamine and heroin. Besides Mexican sources, the drug is also manufactured within the state as well as shipped in from Atlanta.

Pharmaceutical drug abuse is also an issue in South Carolina. The medications abused most are Oxycontin, Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Methadone, Benzodiazepines and Fentanyl.
