There are some people who are addicted to the feelings associated with love. These persons may go from relationship to relationship in order to capture those feelings of new love and infatuation. Often times, it becomes difficult if not impossible, for them to develop and maintain relationships with other people, at least not meaningful ones. This is because they are unable stay with one person for very long. Just like a drug addict, they are always on the lookout for their next fix.
People unfamiliar with this sort of addiction may simply dismiss it and write it off as made-up or insignificant. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Individuals with a love addiction can cause harm not only to themselves but also to the people they are in a relationship with and any children which come from those unions. These addicts often leave a trail of tears, broken hearts and broken promises. They are often times irresponsible. A person that has had a relationship with such individuals may be forced to go on public assistance if the addict is not willing or able to financially support them and any children they have had together. This directly affects society whose tax dollars help support individuals who require government assistance.
Love addicts also run the risk of getting into legal trouble. Some have married multiple partners at once and thus were found guilty of either bigamy or polygamy. A person with an addiction to love will also hurt themselves. They are unable to fully have a meaningful, responsible relationship with another person.
There are a number of ways to treat a love addiction. An individual may go to counseling. They may alternatively work with someone who specializes in treating individuals with a love addiction or who is at least experienced in this area. Just like any other addiction, addicts must be willing and ready to continually do battle against the addiction and may experience setbacks in the process. An addict will likely require ongoing support and perhaps even long-term treatment. However, a love addiction is “curable” and an individual can change their lives if they are committed to doing so and receive the help that they need.
