Vicodin Addiction

February 6, 2010

Vicodin is a very powerful pain medication. Doctors generally prescribe it for those who suffer from moderate to a moderately severe pain.  However, there is a danger inherent in vicodin use.  Mainly that it is addicting. If individuals aren't extremely careful about using the drug according to the instructions given by their physician, they run the risk of developing an addiction to it. There are some people, even after following their doctor’s instructions, that get hooked anyway.  There are also those who suffer from so much pain then they don't feel like they can function without pain relievers such as vicodin.  Subsequently, they use it longer then their doctor suggests or more often, which causes many persons to develop a dependency to the drug.

Vicodin is an opiate and therefore, those who decide to get help via drug rehabilitation, may also need to enter a drug detoxification program. A detox program can help addicts get through the withdrawal process much easier.  It will also ensure that the process is safe. Many people continue to use drugs because they want to avoid painful, uncomfortable and distressing withdrawal symptoms.

Vicodin addiction is one that is experienced by many different types of people. Addicts come in all ages, races and are both male and female. As stated above, some people begin taking vicodin for legitimate purposes having been prescribed it by their doctor.  Other individuals take it strictly for recreational purposes, basically to get high. These individuals may purchase it online, steal it or buy it from street dealers.

A person with a Vicodin addiction that is attempting to stop, may experience the following withdrawal symptoms, depression, panic, pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, cold sweats and aching in the limbs.  Many of these can be relieved or the pain at least lessened, if a person goes through drug program and detox. During this process, they may be given drugs such as methadone or Suboxone for this purpose. Those that are interested in receiving medications throughout the withdrawal process will want to make sure that whatever drug rehab program they are considering entering, offers it.
