This sentiment has been the reason that many a person has become hooked on drugs. There are some people who believe that they are so mentally tough, astute and smart that they can avoid drug addiction. There is no truth to such a belief.
Whether or not a person becomes addicted to drugs has nothing to do with how strong minded an individual is. Intelligence does not affect how the body will respond to drugs and how it will effect a person emotionally. An individual may love the way a drug makes them feel so much that they develop a psychological addiction to it. Depending on the drug in question, if it is used over time, the user may develop a tolerance to it and then an addiction. This can occur regardless of how strong mentally a person is.
Arrogance and the misconception that a person is too mentally tough to ever become addicted to drugs is a very dangerous attitude. A much wiser view is one of respect. Drugs and their potential for addiction and destruction must be recognized and people must keep this in mind when they are considering using them.
Anyone can become addicted to drugs. People of all ages, races, ethnicities, intelligence levels and socioeconomic levels have and do become addicted to drugs. Many more people from each of the aforementioned classifications will also deal with addiction in the future.
One of the best indicators of whether or not a person will become addicted to drugs is not how mentally tough they are but whether or not they try them in the first place. A person who never trys drugs, has no potential for addiction. A tough minded person has the same chance as anyone else that gives them a try. It’s basically a crap shoot.
